Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth and jaw using clear, plastic aligners. The aligners fit over your teeth and blend in with your enamel, allowing for a discreet and effective treatment process.

Invisalign aligners are made of SmartTrack®, a tough thermoplastic approved by the FDA. SmartTrack contains no latex or chemicals, making it safe for people with allergies, as well as women who are pregnant.

What types of issues can Invisalign correct?

Gershon Dental uses Invisalign to correct mild and moderate alignment issues, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowding
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Gaps between teeth

You might also benefit from treatment with Invisalign if you have a malpositioned or misaligned jaw.

How does Invisalign treatment work?

Before recommending Invisalign treatment, your Gershon Dental provider conducts an oral exam, takes a series of oral X-rays, and asks about your goals. If your provider determines that your teeth or jaw can benefit from orthodontics, they take a series of digital impressions with an intraoral scanner. Then, they upload your impressions to a computer-design program.

Your Gershon Dental provider uses the design program to create a custom treatment plan that maps out the movements of your teeth and jaw. After finalizing a plan, they walk you through it, and send your impressions to a dental laboratory.

Technicians at the dental laboratory use your impressions to design and manufacture a custom set of Invisalign aligners. When they finish, you return to Gershon Dental and try them on.

Throughout treatment, you visit Gershon Dental every two or three weeks. At each check-up, you change into a new set of aligners that places mild pressure on your teeth and jaw.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign typically takes 6-12* months. To ensure the process goes smoothly, wear your aligners for between 20-22 hours each day, only removing them to eat or to brush and floss.

When you complete Invisalign treatment, you transition to a retainer. A retainer is an orthodontic appliance that prevents your teeth from moving out of the proper position.
