Teeth Whitening Q&A
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry that removes stains from the surface of your tooth enamel. There are a variety of whitening systems available, but almost all of them use hydrogen peroxide as their primary ingredient.
When applied to your teeth, hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the molecules inside. Over time, that process minimizes the stains, making your teeth appear whiter and more aesthetically pleasing.
What causes teeth to change color?
Teeth change color for various reasons, including:
- Tobacco use
- Taking medication with tetracycline
- Oral trauma
- Poor oral hygiene
- Drinking beverages with tannins like cola, coffee, or black tea
You might also develop stained teeth due to the natural aging process. As you get older, your enamel wears away, making the yellow dentin beneath more and more visible.
What are the types of teeth whitening?
Gershon Dental offers several types of teeth whitening, including:
Take-home whitening trays
If you want to whiten your teeth on your own time, consider take-home trays. First, your Gershon Dental provider takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental laboratory. The technicians at the laboratory use your impressions to design and manufacture a set of custom whitening trays that fit your mouth perfectly.
After receiving your trays, you line them with a medical-grade whitening solution and wear them for three or four hours at a time, whenever is most convenient. Over time, the whitening trays gradually brighten your teeth and smile.
In-office teeth whitening with Philips Zoom! can make your teeth up to 8* shades whiter in under an hour. During this type of treatment, your Gershon Dental provider applies a whitening gel to your teeth.
After the gel sits for several minutes, your provider points a special light at your teeth, triggering a whitening reaction. Your provider repeats these steps several times until your smile is the desired shade of white.
Are the results of teeth whitening treatment permanent?
The results of teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but by practicing good oral hygiene, you can extend them for between four and six months*. The providers at Gershon Dental recommend brushing and flossing twice daily and visiting the office every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
To minimize the build-up of stains, stop using tobacco and consider drinking dark beverages like coffee, cola, or tea through a straw.
